Penance Homestay
Penance Homestay Description Penance Homestay is in Kirtipur, a Newar hill town on a ridge about 5 km southwest of central Kathmandu. Kirtipur is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the Kathmandu Valley, with narrow brick-paved lanes, carved wooden windows, temple squares, and a pace that is noticeably different from the city below. It sees far fewer tourists than Patan or Bhaktapur, which is the main reason to base yourself here rather than in central Kathmandu if you want something quieter and more lived-in. The Deluxe Room sleeps two guests at NPR 2,500 per night. Kirtipur's key sites are all walkable from within the town: Bagh Bhairav Temple, Chilancho Stupa, and Uma Maheshwar Temple at the highest point of the ridge with clear-day views of Langtang, Dorje Lakpa, and Gaurishankar. The Champadevi hiking trail begins from Kirtipur for those who want a half-day ridge walk. Taudaha Lake for birdwatching and Chobhar Gorge with Jal Binayak Temple are both a short ride south. Traditional Newari food, including dishes rarely adjusted for tourist menus, is available at local eateries in the old town. Kirtipur is about 20 to 25 minutes from Kathmandu by taxi and well connected by public microvan, making it easy to combine with day trips to Patan, Swayambhunath, or Kathmandu Durbar Square while keeping accommodation costs lower and surroundings quieter. Tribhuvan University sits at the base of the hill, which gives the town a mix of old Newar character and everyday campus energy that makes it feel less frozen-in-time than some heritage towns.
